Taking place once every two years in a different city in the UK*, British Dance: Edition is one of the foremost events in the dance calendar. A prestigious showcase, the four day event provides an opportunity for selected British dance companies and independent dance artists to present their work. Hundreds of national and international programmers visit BDE in search of inspiring British work to take to their own audiences.
Previous BDE’s have welcomed visitors from as far away as Russia, Taiwan and Mozambique with approximately 38% of attendees visiting from overseas. In 2006 attendees came from, Canada, Lithuania, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, China, Hungary, Thailand, Germany, Kenya, Sri Lanka and the USA.
From 30th January to 2nd February 2008, British Dance: Edition 2008 will take place in Liverpool, the European Capital of Culture for 2008. Liverpool's theatres and alternative spaces will be filled with an eclectic programme of diverse and contemporary performance; profiling new and emerging work, alongside some of the more well known and established dance companies.
The programme intends to provide dance presenters with a variety of choices and encourage the regular and less frequent dance promoter to see work that is both challenging and accessible, in relation to a variety of styles, scales and intended audiences.
*BDE is hosted in rotation by the National Dance Agencies. Previous Editions have taken place in Newcastle, Birmingham, Cambridge and Leeds, since the event began in London in 1992 under the guise of The Place’s Spring Dance.
All work presented at BDE 2008 will be available to tour during 2008 / 2009.
